God is Sovereign

Only a Sovereign God can affix power to words, calling forth a thought that was conceived in the spirituality of His mind to create a universe filled with billions of stars. Who else can speak a word and from it call forth life into a lifeless universe.

God is Sovereign

And God Said...

To better understand the character of God it is important to know that first and foremost, God is Sovereign. Only a Sovereign God can affix power to words, calling forth a thought that was conceived in the spirituality of His mind to create a universe filled with billions of stars. Who else can speak a word and from it call forth life into a lifeless universe.

As He spoke the word, out of the darkness came a cataclysmic explosion; some call it the big bang but God called it the beginning. Covering the vastness of space with the speed of light, hot rock and burning gases that just appeared out of the darkness from nowhere was hurled through space faster than any eye could see until they reached the exact place where God wanted them to be placed.

Then God in His sovereignty gave the command for each of these giants to “Stop!” And obeying His voice, these gargantuan, molten, burning masses stood still and began to spin on their axis and travel a path of orbit that only a Sovereign God could plan. Suspended in the cold empty vacuum of space God called them stars, and their colossal mass and weight are held up by nothing but the power of His Majestic Word.

From the dust of the earth God formed the first man, intricately designing him to be an exact replica of Himself—a little god so to speak, with features and character similar to God. Only a Sovereign God could then breathe His Spirit into the nostrils of a clay man who then became a living soul—a living being made of flesh and blood with intricate organs, many of them with functions that we still do not fully understand.

God is the Proprietor of the entire universe and He governs without intrusion. Whatever He says is the way it is, and nobody can oppose Him because God is Sovereign. He rules all by Himself and He doesn’t need anybody else.

God Has Absolute Authority

Sometimes we forget about the Sovereignty of God. Becoming diluted and filled with ourselves, we often visualize the authority that God has given us to rule the earth as supreme. But our position of authority is not THE authoritative position; only God has absolute authority because only God is Sovereign.

Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon is a perfect example of authority with wrong aim. Like Satan, the king of Babylon was not satisfied with his position of authority, he wanted to be God. But after having a troubling dream interpreted by the prophet Daniel it was proven to Nebuchadnezzar that God is Sovereign.

Having built such a miraculous empire Nebuchadnezzar became diluted with his own thoughts not taking into account the Sovereignty of God. King Nebuchadnezzar had an image of gold constructed to be a symbol of his power and authority. Then he made a decree that everyone should bow down to the image and worship it. Whoever did not bow down to worship the image, the king commanded them to be thrown alive into a fiery furnace.

Now there were certain Jews in the service of the king who refused to bow down to worship the image. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abad-Nego chose to submit themselves to the will of the Sovereign God of the universe for they said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up” (Daniel 3:16-18).

With no higher authority in Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar was the sovereign ruler of his kingdom, but he soon discovered that his rule was not absolutely sovereign. After having Shadrach, Meshach, and Abad-Nego bound with ropes and thrown into the furnace for disregarding his command to worship his golden image, Nebuchadnezzar was humbled as he watched in amazement to see that these men were not overcome by the fire. Not only did they survive the fire but their clothes, their hair, nor the ropes that bound them were not burned and neither did they smell of smoke.

God rules with righteousness and His Kingdom and Throne is eternal (Psalm 45:6). This incident was one of the many miracles of God that recorded in the Bible for our reference so we may know and understand that He is Sovereign. God has the awesome ability to defy natural laws that govern physics because He is the Creator of everything and nothing is beyond His power because our God is Sovereign.
